Applying a base coat may seem like an extra step in your routine, but we would always recommend using one as it offers the following benefits:
Protects – A base coat creates a protective barrier between your nails and the polish.
Adhesion – The base coat provides a smooth surface for the nail polish to adhere to. This helps extend the longevity of your manicure by reducing chipping and peeling.
Prevents nail discolouration – Some polishes, particularly darker shades, can stain your nails over time. A base coat acts as a barrier, minimising the direct contact between the nail polish and your nails, thus reducing the risk of staining.
Promotes nail health – Our treatment base coats contain ingredients that nourish, strengthen and promote overall nail health.
Smooths nail imperfections – If you have ridges or unevenness on your nails, a base coat can help smooth them out, providing a more even surface for polish application.
We recommend applying two coats of nail polish following your treatment base coat, however, the number you choose to apply would depend on the opacity of the polish and the desired intensity of the colour. If the polish you are using is particularly sheer you may wish to apply additional coats to build up the desired colour intensity, whilst darker shades usually require fewer coats to achieve full coverage.
It’s important to allow each thin coat to dry fully before applying the next one to avoid smudging or streaking.
To remove your nail polish, moisten a cotton wool pad with some Wipe + Erase Nail Polish Remover and then gently press gently onto the nail. Allow the remover to soak into the polish for a few seconds before wiping away. We recommend placing a towel or paper towel on the surface you will be working to protect it from any spills or stains. To remove any remaining polish around the edges of your nails or in difficult-to-reach areas, dip a Neat + Tidy Orangewood Stick into the nail polish remover and use it to gently clean up the edges.
The life of your manicure or pedicure will depend on your lifestyle and how you look after your nails. If you are using a base and top coat, you can expect your polish to stay intact for 7-10 days on your fingertips and even longer on your toenails.
We recommend storing your nail polish in an upright position to prevent any leakages, in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and direct heat.
After the first opening our nail polishes have a life of 24 months before we recommend you dispose of them.
Nurturing your cuticles is an important step in fostering robust nail health. Here are some of our expert tips on how to effectively care for your cuticles:
Hydration is key – Regularly hydrate them to prevent dryness and maintain their softness and suppleness. Treat your cuticles to the nourishing goodness of our Nourish + Nurture Nail and Cuticle Oil, Refine + Pamper Intensive Cuticle Cream or Soft + Supple Hand Cream – Gently massage the product into the base of your nails to promote deep hydration.
Gently push back, don’t cut – Instead of cutting your cuticles, which can lead to infection or damage, gently push them back using our Neat + Tidy Cuticle Pusher or a Neat + Tidy Orangewood Stick. Do this after showering or bathing when your cuticles are soft. Only trim hangnails or loose, excess skin carefully with clean cuticle nippers.
Protect your cuticles – When exposing your hands to water or chemicals, such as washing dishes or cleaning, wear protective gloves. This helps prevent excessive contact with water, harsh detergents and cleaning products, which can dry out the cuticles.
Avoid picking or biting – Refrain from picking, biting or tearing at your cuticles, as this can lead to irritation, infection and damage to the nail bed. Instead, keep them moisturised and gently push them back when needed.
Maintain overall nail health – A healthy diet and proper nail care contribute to the health of your cuticles. Ensure you are getting adequate vitamins, minerals, and nutrients for strong nails.
We would recommend wearing a top coat as it offers many benefits that can enhance the longevity and appearance of your manicure:
Increased durability – A top coat acts as a protective layer that seals and shields your nail polish, helping to prevent chipping and peeling whilst extending the lifespan of your manicure.
Enhanced shine – A top coat adds a glossy finish to your nails and intensifies the shine of your nail polish, making your manicure appear more vibrant and lustrous.
Quick-drying – Our top coats have a fast-drying formula that can significantly reduce the drying time of your manicure. This is especially beneficial if you’re short on time or prone to smudging your nails while they’re wet.
Smoothing & evening – If your nail polish application isn’t entirely smooth or has minor imperfections, a top coat can help even out the surface, providing a smoother and more flawless finish.
Protection against fading & yellowing – Our top coats contain a UV filter that protects your nail polish from fading or yellowing due to sun exposure or environmental factors. This helps maintain the vibrancy and colour integrity of your manicure.
Here are our top tips to help you enjoy a longer lasting manicure:
Prep your nails – Before applying any polish, make sure your nails are clean, dry and free from any oils or previous polish by using our Wipe + Erase Nail Polish Remover.
Apply a base coat – Choose a prescriptive base coat suited for your nail type and apply prior to polish to create a smooth surface for the polish to adhere to.
Apply thin coats of polish – Applying thin layers speeds up drying time and also reduces the risk of smudging or chipping. Allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next one.
Seal the edges – After applying each coat of polish, run the brush along the free tips of your nails to seal them.
Add a top coat – Don’t overlook the importance of a top coat in your manicure routine. It not only adds a glossy finish but also provides a protective shield, safeguards against chipping, amplifies the brilliance of the colour, and prolongs the lifespan of your polish. Reapply the top coat every few days to preserve your at-home manicure.
Wear gloves – Avoid excessive exposure to water or harsh chemicals as this can cause the polish to lift and chip. When it is unavoidable wear protective gloves for household chores or tasks involving prolonged water contact.
Moisturise your cuticles – Keep your cuticles and nail beds moisturised with our Nourish + Nurture Cuticle Oil or Refine + Pamper Intensive Cuticle Cream. Well hydrated nails and cuticles are less prone to dryness, which can lead to chipping and breakage.
Avoid heat & harsh chemicals – Exposure to extreme heat, such as hot showers, baths or prolonged sun exposure, can weaken the polish.
Maintain your manicure – If you notice any chips or imperfections, apply a small amount of polish over the affected area immediately and seal it with your Mii top coat.
Yes, it is important to cleanse your nails before applying nail colour as it helps to create a clean and smooth surface for the polish to adhere to, resulting in a longer lasting manicure. Here are our recommended steps:
Remove any existing polish – If you have any old nail polish on your nails, use our gentle Wipe + Erase Nail Polish Remover to thoroughly remove it.
Trim and shape your nails – Trim your nails to your desired length and shape them using a Neat + Tidy Emery Board. Ensure that your nails are even and free from any jagged edges.
Soak your nails – Fill a bowl with warm water and add a few drops of a mild soap or our gentle Cleanse + Condition Hand Cleanser. Soak your nails in the solution for a few minutes to soften the cuticles and remove any dirt or debris.
Clean and gently push back your cuticles – After soaking, use a Neat + Tidy Cuticle Pusher or a Neat + Tidy Orangewood Stick to gently push back your cuticles. Be careful not to apply too much pressure to avoid causing any damage or discomfort.
Remove excess oil or residue – Using a nail brush or a soft toothbrush, gently scrub your nails and the surrounding skin to remove any remaining dirt, oil or residue.
Rinse and dry your nails – Rinse your hands and nails thoroughly with clean water to remove any soap or cleanser. Pat your hands dry with a clean towel or let them air dry.
After cleansing your nails, you can proceed to apply your chosen Mii prescriptive base coat, followed by your chosen Colour Confidence Nail Polish and Mii top coat.
You can apply a cuticle oil or cream at any time, but there are a few key moments when it’s especially beneficial to do so:
Daily – To maintain healthy cuticles, it’s good practice to apply a cuticle oil on a daily or regular basis to help keep your cuticles moisturised, prevent dryness and to promote overall nail health.
After washing your hands – Washing your hands frequently can strip the skin and cuticles of their natural oils, leading to dryness. Applying our Nourish + Nurture Nail and Cuticle Oil or Refine + Pamper Intensive Cuticle Cream after washing your hands helps to replenish moisture and restore hydration to the cuticles.
Before bedtime – Applying cuticle oil or cream before going to bed is an excellent way to nourish and hydrate your cuticles overnight.
After manicures – After completing a manicure or removing nail polish, applying cuticle oil is beneficial to replenish the natural oils.
When cuticles feel dry or overgrown – If you notice your cuticles becoming dry, rough or overgrown, it’s a good indication that they need extra care. Applying cuticle oil or cream at this time can help moisturise and soften the cuticles, making them easier to push back or trim if necessary.
Once you have painted your nails, it will be touch dry after 10 minutes. However, it will take up to 1 hour for them to be fully dry so during this time the polish may still be prone to smudging.
